Carbon Capture Storage (CCS): Future Technologies Against Global Warming (2)
Carbon Capture Storage Technology called CCS is a technology to separate carbon dioxide released by power-generating station (power stations) or industrial process, was captured and transport in particular place. Furthermore, it will store for long time. The purpose of the CCS technology is clearly reduces carbon dioxide emissions that impact on global warming. At this stage these capture carried out the separation process by several methods such as post-combustion. This method is usually done in conventional power plant. It will capture after the combustion process. Smoke coming out of the chimney will be separated using scrubbing to generate pure carbon.
Another method in CCS concerned is pre-combustion by capturing before combustion process. pre-combustion Technology must involve other processes such as gasification. It reactor will separate it and other fuels such as hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide. Oxy-fuel and Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) are still being developed to produce an effective and efficient method. Furthermore, it is transported to be moved to the storage area (storage). In storage system, carbon dioxide can be stored with three forms: solid, liquid and gas. It depends on the purpose and which place.
Carbon dioxide can be stored at a particular depth within the earth called geo-sequestration. This method uses injection technique in supercritical form at high pressure. This uses the site of the former mining like oil fields, gas fields, and coal mines. In the liquid state, it is kept far below the ocean surface. There are technique methods in the use of this method. First, the injection of carbon dioxide by ship or pipeline at a depth of more than 1000 m. it is then dissolved in the liquid. Secondly is the injection of carbon dioxide at depths over 3000 m where it has a density than the liquid. Another concept is to convert Carbon dioxide into bicarbonate (limestone) and storing the Clara hydrate. The third form is to store in solid. It will be reacted with metal oxides and produces a more stable carbonates. All these methods will be discussed in upcoming posts.
